Tilsner News
A record 2,787 visitors passed through the Tilsner Artists' Cooperative during the two days of the Spring 2004 St. Paul Art Crawl, on 23-25 April 2004. More than 50 Tilsner artists participated, including painters, jewellers, photographers, musicians, sculpters, actors, furnature-makers, potters, confectioners, designers, craft artists, and chefs. Tilsner residents Nigel Parry and Michael Winikoff photographed the second day of the Art Crawl. Text by Nigel Parry. | The large live-work spaces in the Tilsner allow for gallery-style presentations of artists' work, and easily accommodate the thousands of visitors that visit the building during this twice annual St. Paul event. As one resident artist commented, "The Art Crawls are like holidays; there's a sense of anticipation, people are in a good mood, and it's a lot of fun to walk round the building and see what people have been working on in the last six months." | In The Basement Theater Productions offered a selection of drama in the main Tilsner Atrium for the second Art Crawl in a row. This prominent feature of the Tilsner Art Crawl has proved popular with visitors. (NP) |

| Another new feature in the adjoining East Atrium was a commendably large-scale cooking demonstration by Kurt Klingner and the Culinary Commandos, a group of chefs studying at Le Cordon Blue school at Minnesota's Brown College. The commandos included Chef Gil Gaitan (sugar station), Andy Anderson (fry station), Shirley Yang (sweets), Steve Westerbeck (barbecue) and all the gaps were filled by Dave Witmer and Pat Hecker, with a guest appearance by Trenton Dumont. | Although he's never seen the popular reality TV show, American Chopper, Tilsner artist Rurik was recently commissioned to undertake a pirate-themed custom paint job for a local motorcycle shop. Apparently, no wrenches were thrown across the workshop during the process. (MW) |
